0.Research
18 Apr(This was done after the concept was finalized, but I needed some scope to see if there was any similar ideas)
This is all that I could find, in terms of photography.
Basically nothing professional was made, and the bubbles themselves are drawn. Probably on Photoshop.
The premise of the thought bubbles reminded me of Pop Art, namely Roy Lichtenstein.
Something like this, but nothing dramatic. I always tend to keep it light-hearted.
12. New ideas and backups
18 AprThe brief states that the minimum of photographs should be 9. But I needed to create 9+ concepts.
Reason being that if I can’t get the assigned models to shoot, then I would have other ideas as backups.
The life drawing idea was working well, but the assigned model was unavailable at the time, so unfortunately it didn’t come to fruition.
The right page was full of backup ideas. Only 2 were finalized.
10. Fixing some stuff
13 AprFor the class photo, I wanted to have the thoughts of the students to be a little panicky to right outrageous.
Initial sketches displayed 8 students, but it may be just 6, depending on the time and space.
I figured out the right composition for the martial artist shoot, and what to implement in the Yin-Yang bubble.
9. Aesthetics
13 AprI thought if each situation was different, so should the look of the bubbles
For example: If a martial artist would think, what would his bubble look like?
Martial arts is the balance of harmony and focus, and the two complement each other, like the Yin-Yang.
So I figured the look of his bubble should be in the shape of the Yin-Yang, with one side stating the combat aspect and the other one stating spiritual aspects.
Some will be over the model’s head, others will be in front of their faces. The bubble is more important than the model.
8. Fleshing it Out
13 AprAfter the creating the new concept, I decided to flesh it out a bit more. How flowing the mind can be when you have a strong idea!
The concept is “Thought Process”. What I think how people would think in various situations and activities.
It can be situtaed in anything, from waiting at a bus stop, to reading a book, but the thought bubble must translate what each person is thinking.
These were some examples I came up with.
7. Lesson
20 MarOn Friday the 15th of March, we did a little bit of camera practice in class.
The lesson was about lighting and focus.
In every photoshoot, there should be a Key Light. It is the primary light source, it should be the strongest light source and the camera aperture should have the same settings as the Key Light aperture.
Golden Rule: Use less number of lights as possible (Use reflectors as substitutes).
The second lesson we learnt was about focusing 2 objects in a shot.
Focusing the object in the foreground.
Focusing the object in the background.
Focusing both objects (The trick is to put another object a 1/3 of the way from the foreground object, focus on it and then remove it).
6. New Idea!
15 MarAs soon as I found out that we can use human models for still life photography, this initial idea came up in my head.
The exact meaning of it is very vague, so I’ll try and flesh it out as best as possible.
This was another idea I was thinking of, but it didn’t get me very far to be honest.
I’m having a fairly good idea for the first image…
